Ignition components fitted

2005-08-21 00:00:00

Over the past few weeks, i ordered a number of replacement parts for the ignition system, not because anything was faulty, but just because i wanted to treat the car to few upgrades. Unfortunately, during this time a misfire began to make an appearence every now and then so i was hoping these new parts would cure it. To my disappointment, they didn't, but the difference they made to the car was apparent.

The following components were all fitted today:
  • Magnecor KV85 competition leads
  • Champion Eon spark plugs
  • Spark plug extensions
  • Distributor cap
  • Rotor arm
  • Flamethrower ignition coil
Once fitted and with the engine fired up, it was clear that it was much keener to rev and the slightest pressure on the pedal would cause the revs to increase. On the road, the car seems to pull better at low revs as if there has been a considerable increase in torque. With the throttle fully open, the engine sounds much happier to work above 5000rpm - it just sounds smoother, whereas previously it seemed a bit uncontrolled.

There has only been one side effect - the rev counter has gone mental! At idle, it jumps around by as much as 500rpm in either direction and blipping the throttle will cause the needle to shoot right round the dial to the redline. It must be picking up interference from somewhere as it no longer presents what the engine is actually doing.

Update: The Flamethrower coil has since been removed with the original Bosch part re-fitted. There was an ever so slight stutter at almost exactly 3000rpm which annoyed me just a little too much. Either side of 3000rpm, the coil was fine. Having replaced it with the original part, the rev counter is also much more settled.
